Colt King Cobra Quick Review

In 2019, the King Cobra was reintroduced with a three-inch barrel. Gun debuts at Shot Show 2019.

Like all .357 Magnum revolvers, the Colt King Cobra can chamber and fire the shorter .38 Special cartridge. Colt Snake guns are one of the most desirable and popular revolver series in recent memory. There are variations from the basic Cobra revolver to the massive Colt Anaconda. My personal Colt revolver is a Colt King Cobra. My grandfather liked big guns and used them only for hunting and shooting. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to go out with my grandparents and shoot a revolver with them before they died. My grandfather owned several different Colts including a King Cobra, two Pythons and an Anaconda and other large caliber firearms. Unfortunately, my grandfather died of brain cancer in 2009, but in his will, he left me his King Cobra with factory box and owners manual.

When I got the handgun in 2009 the King Cobra prices were very cheap compared to the Python at the time. The King Cobra used to be less desirable for snake collecting but prices have started to rise dramatically in the last few years. I love shooting the King Cobra at the range, just appreciate how well made the revolver is. Since the prices are so high right now, I always leave the King Cobra in the safe. I always feel guilty and can't shake it off. However, I took it safe and appreciated it from a collector's point of view along with my sentimental value.

The biggest thing about the King Cobra and Colt's other snake guns is the size of the handgun's presence. Whether you're shooting at the range or just looking at it, the King Cobra is refined and sexy while still being a great shooting pistol. Samuel L. Jackson had a hand in Long Kiss Goodnight when he delivered the classic line "This ain't no ham on Rye Pal." As a teenager, I thought Samuel L Jackson had a cool vibe in that movie and I remember him threatening people with a flashy revolver. Fast forward fifteen years and I am now the proud owner of the same revolver. Now to be honest, I'm a big fan of the Smith & Wesson 686 revolver, but to me, the older versions of the King Cobra have a more refined feel to them.

Of all the handguns I've owned and shot regularly, I still believe the King Cobra has the smoothest DA/SA trigger of any gun in my collection. Modern guns are generally designed for rapid controlled shooting. In general, the new material is intended to be shot in competitions or training courses. The gun community has moved from shooting for fun to shooting for a purpose. Whether it's training or competition, young shooters often don't just go out shooting for fun. I fell into this trap and tried to make all my trips instead of just going out to enjoy shooting for fun.

The King Cobra looks like a pure Cadillac from the 1950s. You can do it as fast as you can, but it's more fun if you just slow down and enjoy the ride. The King Cobra is also an experience to shoot compared to most handguns I have owned. You can take it easy and enjoy the experience of pulling the hammer back in one action. Everything feels more mechanical in the King Cobra and the feel back in your hand is more satisfying. King Cobra's recoil is a special phase when activated regularly.

When loaded with the .357 Magnum round, the gun is very easy to control. It always amazes me how much fun it is to shoot a King Cobra without killing your arm. The party piece of the King Cobra is how accurate the gun is with its 6-inch barrel. Usually at 25 yards, you can always get one inch groups with good ammo. The gun is a joy to shoot and a completely different experience from the amazing polymers on the market today.

At the end of the day, old snake guns will always have a special place in my heart. My best memories are growing up shooting different variants. I feel very fortunate to have inherited a great revolver from my grandfather. I am more grateful that I have memories of shooting together. I don't shoot the King Cobra much because of its cost. Honestly, that doesn't stop me from using it occasionally. The King Cobra is one of those guns that is a special occasion to shoot. This is a gun that brings back what is most important in recreational shooting, which is the joy of shooting.

Uncovered At Shot Show 2019: Colt's Pit Of Snakes

This is a gun that brings a smile to my face and takes me back to a simpler time in life. When I go to the range to shoot it's not to train or help others but just for fun. If you have never fired an old style snake gun, I encourage you to do so. They are fine examples of what a high quality revolver is. I am an avid shooter and love to educate whether it is at my job or the shooting community. I'm an average Joe who really likes to talk to other people about firearms and other interests. For those of us on the double action bandwagon waiting for Colt to do something with a bigger frame.
