First introduced in 1986, the Colt King Cobra is a medium-sized, six-round cylinder double-action revolver that was designed and manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company and marketed to civilian gun owners and law enforcement. Available in blued and stainless steel in a variety of barrel lengths and chambered for cterfire .357 Magnum ammunition.

The King Cobra design is based on that of an earlier Colt model, the highly regarded Trooper MK V, enhanced by the addition of a beefier barrel, a full ejector rod guard, and a thicker solid rib above the barrel. The King Cobra was introduced in 1986, discontinued in 1992, and returned to the Colt product line in 1994. Released a second time in 1998, it was not reintroduced until 2019 as a three-inch .357 Magnum phase variant of the 2017 Colt. Cobra.

Built on the 1986-1992 Colt medium "V" frame, the King Cobra was offered in very high quality carbon steel with Colt's bright and highly polished Deep Royal Blue finish. From 1987-1992 and 1994-1998 matte stainless steel was offered, and from 1988-1992 the polished stainless steel variant became available. King Cobras are equipped with either oversized walnut target grips or knurled black hard rubber combat grips and a large target hammer.
The Cobra sight system consists of a fixed red iron insert rear sight and a fully adjustable white iron outline rear sight.
On blued steel models, 4- and 6-inch barrels were available from 1986 until the blued guns were discontinued in 1992, a 2.5-inch length with a blued finish was also offered from 1990- 1992. In the matte stainless range, a 2.5-inch length was cataloged from 1987-1992, 2-inch barrels were offered from 1988 until King Cobra production ceased in 1992 and again in 1994-1998. Barrel lengths of 4, 6, and 8 inches were also available on matte stainless finish models from 1990 to 1992; they returned to the 1994-1998 product line. In mirror stainless finish, 4- and 6-inch lengths were offered from 1988-1992, a 2.5-inch was available from 1990-1992, and 8-inch sizes were offered from 1989-1992. The King Cobra is chambered for the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge, but like all .357 revolvers, it will also fire .38 Special ammunition.
Colt also produced a total of six King Cobras with three-inch barrels and fixed sights. These were made for the Montreal Police Department, who expressed interest in such a model for plainclothes officers. The revolver was never accepted and the six samples were returned to the dealer. One appeared in North Carolina in 2006, was written by Colt Archives, listed on Gunbroker, and is now in the hands of a private collector. The fate of the other five is unknown.

In 2019, the King Cobra was reintroduced with a three-inch barrel. The pistol debuted at SHOT Show 2019.
