Every Glock Gen - Confused about all models of Glock? You're not the only one, but we're here to walk you through them!

Glock is the best service pistol out today, which is very impressive for a company founded to make curtain rods. Gaston Glock had no experience making guns, but he had experience making polymer. He assembled top European handgun experts, created a prototype of the Glock 17 in 1982, and the rest is glorious Austrian history.

Glock pistols are polymer-framed, semi-automatic, short-recoil operated, lock-break, strike-fire handguns. Well, most of them are - the Rimmfire G44 is a blowback operated pistol and is the only pistol that breaks the mold. Glock pistols come in tons of different calibers and in different sizes. These were not the first polymer frame pistols, but they were the first wildly successful polymer pistols.

Glock Pistols Gen3 Vs Gen4. What Is The Difference Between The Generations?

The G17 was the first model to be produced and was developed to meet a need in the Austrian army. The specific needs of the Austrian army drove the weapon development and defined Glock pistols to this day. The Austrian Army needed a safe, lightweight, high capacity and reliable semi-auto pistol, and the Glock filled that need.

Glock has a simple way of naming their pistols. Each model is assigned a number after the letter G, which predictably stands for Glock. The numbers have nothing to do with the firearm itself and may seem arbitrary to most - for example, the G45 is not a 45 caliber pistol, it is actually a 9mm.

The numbers are assigned to designs as they are launched, not in the order in which they are released. So while the G20 and 21 began development before the 22 and 23, the 22 and 23 were released first.

The G17 hit the streets at a time when manual safeties on handguns were the norm. Glock's Plastic Fantastics didn't have a manual safety, but that didn't mean they were unsafe. Glock refers to their pistols as the Glock Safe Action Pistol, referring to the three built-in independent safeties.

The trigger safety is the famous little doohickey that sits in the center of the trigger. Your finger presses on the trigger safety as you pull the trigger, so without engaging the trigger safety, the trigger cannot be pulled.

The safety lock blocks the firing pin from moving forward when the striker is cocked. When the trigger is pulled, the trigger rod pushes the safety catch up and out of the way. When you release the trigger before firing, the firing pin safety automatically drops back into place.

The Drop Security is a device that does exactly what you think. Lowering the weapon will make it unable to fire. When you pull the trigger, the trigger bar lowers the safety ramp and releases the firing pin.

Glock is currently in its fifth generation. New generations are coming as Glock makes changes, both externally and internally. There is no timeline for when Glock generations end or start, they improve as needed.

Step By Step: How To Clean A Glock (with Photos)

The release of a new generation does not always mean that previous generations disappear. Often new and older Glock generations are produced side by side.

There are also guns that exist outside of Glock defined generations. Some weapons are ubiquitous and may lack generation designations to determine which generation a weapon is. Some weapons are also split generations, mostly between Gen 2 and Gen 3 weapons. Glock aficionados often refer to them as Gen 2.5 guns.

Gen 1 - The first Glocks on the market. Plain and simple: these are weapons that work. Gen 1 consists entirely of one pistol, the Glock 17.

Gen 2 - Glock added several sizes and calibers with Gen 2 models. A metal plate with the serial number was inserted, the guide rod system became a piece of design, dice were added to the front and rear of the handle, and the magazine bottom plate was changed.

Gen 3 - Third generation is where rails became a standard option on guns larger than subcompacts. The grip added finger grooves and scallops cut into the left and right sides of the bezel, which served as a thumb rest.

Internal changes include a cross pin above the trigger pin to ease the load on the locking block. The suction now also increased when the chamber was filled and acted as a loaded chamber indicator.

Gen 4 - With the Gen 4, Glock made the pistol grip slightly smaller and added a modular backstrap system to change the size of the grip. The grip was also structured more aggressively, and journal publication was made reversible for the left.

The Gen 4 also incorporates a dual spring recoil rod assembly that reduces felt recoil. Gen 4 was also the introduction of MOS guns, which allowed for easy optics mounting.

Gen 5 - The latest Glock generation is the Gen 5. These pistols saw the removal of finger grooves, the magazine well enlarged for faster reloads, a high relief cut was made in the trigger guard for a higher grip, and the Slide is now ambidextrous.

In addition, Glock added a new barrel to the pistols, and the cross pin above the trigger guard has also been removed.

Now that you have the basics, we can move into specific models, categories and more in Part 2!

Glock 19 Gen5 Review: Could This Be The Best 9mm Gun?

In retrospect, it would have been convenient if Glock had just named their pistols after the cartridges they were chambered for: G9 for 9mm, G10 for 10mm, G40 for 40 S&W, and so on.

But Glock named their pistols after their patents, not their cartridges. The G17, for example, was Gaston Glock's 17th patent. In addition, Glock offers several different pistols chambered for the same cartridge.

It only follows that the Austrian handgun manufacturer should offer a range of guns chambered for 9mm ammunition, the world's most popular pistol cartridge for self-defense. Their model numbers tell you nothing about what makes these guns unique. You either have to learn them all through the studio, or check out our handy Glock 8mm Models Guide if you want to know what makes each model different.

Every Glock Gen

The original Glock pistol, the G17, is used by LEOs, military personnel and anyone who entrusts their personal safety to a handgun worldwide. We'll spend most of our time detailing the G17 because much of what we can say about it also applies to Glock's other 9mm handguns.

What Gen Is My Glock

As with all Glock handguns (and virtually every other manufacturer's 9mm handgun), the G17 is short recoil operated. This means that the cylinder and bolt only move a short distance backwards. At that point the barrel stops, the bolt continues rearward, and the recoil spring is compressed to initiate simultaneous feeding and extraction.

Like other Glock handguns, the G17 has a nylon-based polymer frame. Gaston Glock himself invented this proprietary material called "Polymer 2". Lightweight yet extremely durable, the Glock's polymer frame is usually only looked down upon because it is not as aesthetically pleasing as a metal frame with wooden grips. Contrary to popular misconception, Glock's pistols are not "X-ray proof". 84% of the weight of G17 consists of steel, and the polymer 2 itself can be detected via X-ray.

The barrel of a Glock handgun is notably lacking in traditional rifles. Instead of lands and grooves, its polygonal rifle has a hexagonal cross-sectional profile. (Although 45 ACP and 45 GAP models have octagonal profiles.) Because polygonal rifling lacks sharp angles, it is able to create a superior gas seal, which improves more efficient ignition. It is also a little easier to clean.

All modern Glock pistols have the manufacturer's Safe Action. This system includes an integral trigger safety (essentially a trigger that does not operate unless a finger puts pressure on it), a drop safety and a firing pin safety. Of course, you should treat any firearm as if it were always loaded, but the various safety levels of a Glock make it a safe choice for personal protection.

The G17 has a double stack magazine in which the cartridges are stored in two columns. This gives it greater capacity at the expense of making its grip wider. It is important to note that many Glock 9mm magazines are interchangeable as long as they are (A) long enough and (B) the same style (ie single stack or double stack). To
