King Cobra Revolver - Colt's snake guns are one of the most sought after firearms in recent memory. There are many variations from the original Cobra revolvers to the larger Colt Anacondas. My Colt revolver is a Colt King Cobra. My grandfather was a big fan of handguns and enjoyed using them for hunting and recreational shooting. I am very grateful for the opportunity to spend time with my grandparents and shoot with them before they passed away. My grandfather owned several different Colts, including a King Cobra, two Pythons, and an Anaconda, among other high-powered guns. Sadly, my grandfather passed away in 2009 from brain cancer, but at the wheel he left me his King Cobra with the factory box and owner's manual.
Back in 2009 when I got the gun, the King Cobra had very little value compared to the Python at the time. The King Cobra is the least desirable of the snake collection, but in recent years prices have begun to rise. I enjoyed shooting the King Cobra at the range, and it was great to build a revolver. Since the prices have increased now, I often put the King Cobra in the safe. I often feel guilty, I don't shoot much. Instead, I take it in the museum and appreciate it from a collector's perspective and my opinion value.

One of the most important things about the King Cobra and other snake guns from Colt is the size of the gun. Whether you're shooting at the range or just watching, the King Cobra is a pure, beautiful woman when she's ready to shoot. Samuel L Jackson caught one in Long Kiss Goodnight when he said the classic line "Ain't ham on rye." As a teenager, I thought Samuel L Jackson looked great in this movie and I remember him threatening people with a blue gun. Fifteen years later, I am the proud owner of that gun. Admittedly, I'm a big fan of the Smith & Wesson 686 revolver, but to me the older versions of the King Cobra look better.

Of all the handguns I own and shoot regularly, I still think the King Cobra has the smoothest DA/SA trigger of any pistol in my collection. Modern pistols are designed for rapid fire and control. Often times, newbies aim to be able to shoot in competition or training. The gun community has gone from going shooting for fun to shooting for a purpose. Whether it's training or competition, young shooters don't just go out for the fun of recreational shooting. I fell into this trap and tried to make all my trips to the range instead of going out to enjoy shooting for fun.
The King Cobra looks like a 1950's Cadillac. You can drive it fast, but it's better if you slow down and enjoy the ride. The King Cobra has the most shooting experience of any handgun I own. You can slow down and enjoy the experience of bringing the hammer home in one go. Everything is better on the King Cobra and the return to your hand is excellent. Recoil on the King Cobra was minimal to zero when fired every time it was fed .38 Special rounds.
When moving up to .357 Magnum cartridges, the gun is very easy to handle. I'm still amazed at how much fun it is to shoot a King Cobra without having to shoot it by hand. The highlight of the King Cobra is the accuracy of the gun and the 6 inch barrel. That means at 25 yards you can get a bunch of thumbs out of alignment with good ammo. The gun is a joy to shoot and a different experience from the polymer wonders on the market today.
At the end of the day, vintage snake guns hold a special place in my heart. Growing up shooting different styles is one of my fondest memories. I am very fortunate to have inherited the gun from my grandfather. I am more than grateful to have the memory of making a movie together. I don't shoot the King Cobra much because of the price. In fact, this doesn't stop me from using it occasionally. The King Cobra is one of those guns that takes a special time to shoot. A gun that brings back the most important thing in recreational shooting is the fun of shooting.

All six of Colt's King Cobras have three-inch barrels and sights. These were made for the Montreal Police Department, who expressed interest in a model for undercover police. One that came out of North Carolina in 2006, was documented by Colt Archives, listed on Gunbroker, and is in the hands of a private collector. The fate of the other five is unknown.
In 2019 the King Cobra was re-released with a three-inch barrel. The gun debuted at the 2019 SHOT Show.
